Firstly, decent hardware shouldn't mean oversized or unattractive. Thankfully, the Sony Xperia 3G Smartphone isn't too heavy (146 grams), considering it has a mighty amount of power within that sleek stainless casing. It doesn't feel too wide in your hands either. The slide out Qwerty keyboard has more horizontal separation between keys, which helps reduce incorrect presses for those of us of the fat fingered variety, so two-handed use can be almost as fluid as you would SMS.
The "X" themed main buttons are laid out in four on either side in an inverted diamond shape (modern enough and still respectable on style). Combine this with the arc slider design and you have one really distinctive look, credible in both bar or boardroom. The banana movement or "curved slide" angles the screen up to reveal the keyboard design. Its multiple navigation lets you interact via touch, using the full QWERTY keyboard or the 4-way key and optical joystick. The feel is faultless. Moving around the handset, there really is nothing which would upset the clean lines of its design.
The Sony Xperia has all the technical prowess of a Blackberry, with a generous 400MB of internal memory, 256MB RAM and 512MB storage memory. The software is Windows Mobile 6.1, playing out via a slick panel interface. Onto those panels… nine are displayed at a glance, organised to exactly how you want them to appear. At a light finger touch you can choose what you want to access, and scroll through web pages effortlessly (you can just swipe down on it to scroll). Microsoft Pocket Office allows you to view documents in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and PDF format so it's possible to store countless documents and view them, wherever you are. You can also blog pictures and messages on the move and Wi-Fi capabilities mean you'll always be connected.
The glossy, high resolution 3 inch VGA display booms out crisp and vibrant technicolour. This makes accessing your favourite media on the move all that more enjoyable, whether you're watching a choice movie, making a video call to the office or viewing playback of your latest handy work in DVD quality video. And, when you're on the road to nowhere, added to all this is a built-in GPS receiver. Other features include a 3.15 mega pixel camera with motion sensor and picture editing and MP3 player.
If you like horizontal sliders the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 should be your first stop. Young professionals will love this latest offering - a functional yet stylish, magical box of tricks which actually delivers everything it promises.

In its ongoing effort to bridge the digital divide, Nokia introduced a range of affordable mobile devices and innovative new services specifically for people in emerging markets. "In 2002, Nokia unveiled a strategy to lower the cost of owning and operating a mobile phone and to bring the benefits of mobile telephony to people in emerging markets. Today, we are expanding that vision by introducing a number of mobile phones and services that aim to bring the power of the Internet to these markets as well," says Robert Andersson, Executive Vice President, Mobile Devices, Nokia.
Nokia 5130 XpressMusic phone with Internet
Robert Andersson adds: "The mobile device and the Internet are a powerful combination in connecting people with each other, accessing information, news, entertainment and sharing. By introducing products and services that are affordable, relevant and easy-to-use, we believe Nokia can fuel the growth of the Internet in emerging markets through mobility."
Nokia 5130 music phone

A new mobile phone has just been introduced by Nokia. The new Nokia 6600 slide mobile phone balances stunning and sophisticated looks with the latest in mobile functionality. Being one of Nokia's smallest sliders to date, the Nokia 6600 slide stays true to its name as it smoothly glides open in the hand. The appearance of the Nokia 6600 slide with its glossy, high-quality steel covers and aluminium center key constitute both understated elegance as well as visual simplicity. Its well-balanced feature set is created to be exciting and intuitive. Tapping the Nokia 6600 slide twice conveniently indicates time, snoozes, alerts and silences or rejects incoming phone calls.
Nokia 6600 slide - Modern phone features
"There is a strong consumer demand for mobile handsets that blend elegant looks with modern features," said Mikkel Drucker, Director, Connect Devices. "The Nokia 6600 slide introduced today offers a slightly different take on a core design language. We believe it is a beautiful to use and beautiful to behold mobile phone." The Nokia 6600 slide has an estimated retail price of 250 EUR excluding taxes and subsidies and will start shipping during the third quarter of 2008.
Nokia 6600 slider - 3.2 Megapixel digitale camera
The 3.2 megapixel camera takes high quality pictures and videos that can be shared with others via Internet services or multimedia message - directly from the photo menu. The large 2.2" QVGA display with 16 million colors makes it easy to find your way around town, thanks to the integrated Nokia Maps application which can be enhanced with an optional Nokia Bluetooth GPS Module LD-4W and separate navigation license. The slim, lightweight Nokia Bluetooth GPS Module LD-4W features an innovative design that takes Bluetooth navigation beyond the car and into the hands of urban trekkers and leisure travelers.
Nokia BH-803 Bluetooth Headset
Complementing the newly launched handset, the new Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-803 echos the classic style of the handset with a sleek design and stainless steel details. An optional ear loop makes it comfortable to wear, while the exceptional voice quality, touch sensitive volume control and voice dialling activation make for easy use of the Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-803.

Nokia N82 Mapping

All Nokia N82's come with a free voice guided navigation trial. You can purchase additional features, such as a city guide and longer subscription to the navigation.
With access to more than 15 million points of interest, you can locate and navigate where you need to get to. You can also send maps and routes to others via MMS or save map screen shots to the gallery.
The service is available free of charge, although any data transferred over the network will incur charges from your network operator. You will need to check with your network operator.
What Is A-GPS?
Assisted Global Positioning System (A-GPS) assists your mobile device in finding satellites. When using A-GPS, your mobile device receives useful satellite information from an assistance data server over the cellular network. When your mobile device is not receiving assisted data, it tries to detect the available satellites. With the assisted data your mobile device can detect the set of satellites that are worth listening to, that is, the satellites that are on the same side of the planet with your mobile device. A-GPS speeds up the location calculation remarkably.
A-GPS is a network service. It is used by default in Nokia mobile devices that support A-GPS, if no service provider specific A-GPS settings are available.

The Nokia N82 has high speed Wi-Fi connectivity and a one-click upload to online communities which makes sharing easy. You can upload a picture or video with the press of a button.

But the real reason is that the N96 hasn’t moved on enough from the N95 8GB to get us hopping like a mad fool in anticipation.
Streamlined design
It may just be us, but a double dose of storage, microSD card slot, built in DVB-H receiver and a modest design revamp doesn’t really get the blood pressure racing, especially when DVB-H mobile TV has yet to be switched on in Blighty and won’t be in the near future.
Comparing vital stats, the N96 is slightly taller and wider than its N95 8GB amigo, but a trimmer 18mm profile gives it a more streamlined edge. Its new look flushed design helps but, make no mistake, this Symbian smartie is still a pocket-sweller.
Nokia’s penchant for finishing its Nseries phones in glossy veneers is something of a bugbear for some and unfortunately the N96 gives out open invitation to finger smears and pocket grime. Its overly plasticky casing is also puzzling and not the top quality we expect from a flagship handset.
Gaming guru
That said, the N96’s new design is slicker than its more rigid stablemates with a new added dimension to its dual slider action.
Skid down the front and those signature dedicated music controls say hello but fire up the N-Gage and they transform into gaming controls for two-handed operation. The N96 has now pipped the N81 as the best N-Gage gaming phone.
Hello iPlayer
With DVB-H out of commission for us Brits, Nokia has countered by embedding a BBC iPlayer app so you can stream the latest TV programmes over Wi-Fi.
Picture quality was definitely watchable over the sizeable vibrant 2.8-inch display, only interrupted by occasional traces of digital blocking and buffering. Nokia has also factored in a fold out TV table stand just below the camera lens for the more hardcore TV watchers.
Standard snapper
It’s a shame Nokia couldn’t stretch to fitting the N96 with an 8MP lens, but the 5MP Carl Zeiss lens still produces sharp vibrantly coloured photos. Again, disappointingly, there’s no Xenon flash, but the dual LED photo variety is the next best option.
Elsewhere, the N96’s feature set and performance is similar to the N95 8GB, so web browsing is nippy over HSDPA or built-in Wi-Fi, while the Nokia Maps 2.0 and A-GPS combo is great for free basic navigation and more dynamic routing for a little extra dosh. The addition of a microSD card slot also means storage capacity can reach a whopping 24GB with an 8GB card.
Nokia fans should rest easy because despite the initial disappointments, over time, the N96 reveals itself to still be a vintage smartphone, ironing out the quirks of its N95 predecessors and still managing to deliver mobile TV to us gogglebox addicts, regardless of the DVB-H switch off.
